NAS 2013 Courses at ICUA

In 2013 ICUA Zadar will continue to organize NAS courses. We are happy to announce that from this year on, we are also offering NAS part II and III modules for participants who wish to advance in the NAS system.

NAS courses aim to provide not just an introduction to the subject but also offer people a chance to build their skills and experience, allowing them to take part in projects and fieldwork around the world and perhaps to run their own projects.

The ICUA Team will stage courses in three weekly groups in 2013, and it is up to you to select the modules you wish to attend.

Week One: 6-10 May 2013 at ICUA Zadar

Week Two: 20-25 May 2013 at Veštar, Rovinj

Week Three: 1-5 July 2013 at ICUA Zadar

Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology
Location: International Centre for Underwater Archaeology, Božidara Petranovića 1, Zadar

Part I Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology
Location: International Centre for Underwater Archaeology, Božidara Petranovića 1, Zadar

Date: 7-8 May 2013 and 2-3 July 2013
The price of the course is HRK 750 (EUR 100).

Part II Intermediate Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology
Location: Bay of Veštar near Rovinj, underwater archaeological excavation of a medieval pier
Tutors: Mladen Pešić, Luka Bekić
Date: 20-25 May 2013

Part III Advanced Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology
Part III modules will be organized in the weeks when the Introduction and Part I or II courses are held (9-10 May, 23-24 May, 4-5 July 2013). We are offering several modules that will be organized depending on the number of participants interested in attending them. If there are an insufficient number of interested participants for a particular module, we reserve the right to change a module and to organize a module that has interested attendants.

The instructors leading the various modules will be experts who are acknowledged in their field of work. The price of each module is HRK 375 (EUR 50).

  • Flint identification and tool making
  • Identifying pottery
  • Numismatics
  • Finds drawing
  • Conservation of metal underwater finds
  • Conservation of waterlogged wood
  • Conservation of pottery and glass underwater finds
  • Underwater photography
  • Video post-production
  • Techniques of archaeological excavation

The requirements for the Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology and for Part I and II Certificates in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology are Open Water Diver, CMAS* or an equivalent diving certificate, medical certificate ensuring fitness for diving and diving insurance (recommended). Diving equipment should be brought by participants or it can be rented at a local diving club (expenses not covered by the organizers). The organizers will cover the costs of renting and filling diving air tanks.

Note that it is not necessary to have attended an Introductory or Part I course prior to attending Part II or Part III courses; however credit points will only be awarded to those who have completed the Introductory Course.

Participants should arrange transportation to Zadar or Rovinj and back by themselves at their own expense.

Accommodation during the courses in Zadar will be arranged by the organizers at the ICUA dormitory for the first four participants, while other participants should arrange accommodation at their own expense.
