NAS 2014 Courses at ICUA

In 2014 ICUA Zadar will continue to organize Nautical Archaeological Society (NAS) courses. NAS courses aim to provide not just an introduction to the underwater archaeology, but also offer people a chance to build their skills and experience, allowing them to take part in projects and fieldwork around the world and perhaps to run their own projects.

The ICUA Team will conduct NAS courses during 2014 in Veštar bay close to Rovinj.

Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology

Part I Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology
Location: Veštar bay near Rovinj

The price of the course is HRK 750 (EUR 100).

Part II Intermediate Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology
Location: Rovinj surroundings, underwater archaeological excavation of a roman period shipwreck
Tutors: Mladen Pešić, Luka Bekić
Date: 20th - 25th April 2014

Part III Advanced Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology
Part III modules will be organized in the in arrangement with interested participants. We are offering several modules that will be organized depending on the number of participants interested in attending them. If there are an insufficient number of interested participants for a particular module, we reserve the right to change a module and to organize a module that has interested attendants.

The instructors leading the various modules will be experts who are acknowledged in their field of work. The price of each module is HRK 375 (EUR 50).

  • Flint identification and tool making
  • Identifying pottery
  • Numismatics
  • Finds drawing
  • Conservation of metal underwater finds
  • Conservation of waterlogged wood
  • Conservation of pottery and glass underwater finds
  • Underwater photography
  • Video post-production
  • Techniques of archaeological excavation

Courses requirements
The requirements for the Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology and for Part I and II Certificates in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology are Open Water Diver, CMAS* or an equivalent diving certificate, medical certificate ensuring fitness for diving and diving insurance. Diving equipment should be brought by participants or it can be rented at a local diving club (expenses not covered by the organizers). The organizers will cover the costs of renting and filling diving air tanks.

Note that it is not necessary to have attended an Introductory or Part I course prior to attending Part II or Part III courses; however credit points will only be awarded to those who have completed the Introductory Course.

Participants should arrange transportation to Rovinj and back by themselves at their own expense.
