Ninth meeting of the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology, 16th September 2020

 

The ninth meeting of the UNESCO UNITWIN network for underwater archaeology was held online on 16th September 2020, organized by the Chair Network University of Southampton and the Secretariat.
The meeting was chaired by Dr R. Helen Farr and it was attended by UNITWIN Network members (educational institutions in underwater archaeology) and representatives of the Secretariat. A report was submitted on the 11th meeting of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body to the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage – STAB (Mr. Emad Khalil, University of Alexandria). Participants of the meeting were presented the activities of Akdeniz University in Turkey (Mr. Hakan Oniz): a new research centre was established within the University, 57 shipwrecks were found on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey in 2020, an international conference marking the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) will be organized in May 2021.


A google cloud platform was presented, it will further facilitate collaboration and distribution of data, network members are invited to share their databases (Fraser Sturt, University of Southampton).


A report was provided about the preparations for the celebration of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, 2021-2030 (Athena Trakadas, Ocean Decade Heritage Network, National Museum of Denmark).


The Ocean Decade Heritage Network was established in 2019 to coordinate and raise public awareness of the importance of marking the UN Decade.

The Honor Frost Foundation donated Honor Frost’s archive and library to the University of Southampton, this marked the establishment of a dedicated Maritime Archaeological Archive at the Special Collections of the University of Southampton (Lucy Blue, University of Southampton).

 

International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar provided a Croatian translation of a "Model Code of Practice for Safe Diving Operations" prepared by the UNESCO UNITWIN network for underwater archaeology (Doris Kurtov, ICUA Zadar).
