8 June - World Ocean Day

The World Ocean Day is celebrated on June 8 around the world and this year theme is "The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods".

In the context of the global health crisis, this year United Nations World Ocean Day, June 8, 2021, is celebrated for the second time as a virtual event. Over 50 speakers from all around the world will highlight its importance essential for the survival of mankind, the vastness of life underwater, how the ocean is our source of life and what we can do to better protect it.

This year's theme of the UN World Ocean Day is particularly important to mark the launch of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) announced in December 2017 at the UN General Assembly.

The intention is to mobilize all actors around the world in ocean protection to implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development thus strengthening public awareness of the urgent need for new research and the use of existing scientific data to understand the cumulative effects of the seas and oceans are exposed. The UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is coordinating the realization of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)

The celebration of World Ocean Day was proposed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 but only the official decision of the UN General Assembly to proclaim World Ocean Day in 2008 launched a series of activities to protect the sea and oceans around the world.

The UN Ocean Conference  held in June 2017 was convened to support the implementation of the UN SDG Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
